Socioeconomic Indicators of Indiana

Poverty
Although specific characteristics of the counties in which Hoosier is located vary, it is clear that there is a concentration of poverty in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. The map to the right illustrates the frequent occurrence of poverty by county in Indiana and northern Kentucky by intensity of color. Both the region in and near the Hoosier (nine counties outlined in red) and the nearby counties have relatively high percentages of people below the poverty level.

Overview
Historical, biophysical, cultural, and social processes are important in explaining current conditions and differences. The legacy of historical factors, such as the economic depression of the 1930s, partially explains why Hoosier National Forest was established, why it is so fragmented, and why socioeconomic and cultural characteristics vary so much across the region.
