CIPEC Biocomplexity Landscape Modules
We plan a strategy of sampling
three representative modeling zones to create a historical GIS time
series from 1939 to the present to use for initial model development.
These three modeling zones have been chosen to represent the major land
use / land covers and change processes in Monroe County. The zones
are loosely stratified by topography, accessibility, and degree of development.
Initially, models will be run for each zone independently, but in the future,
we hope to both integrate models and increase the spatial scope of our
model.
In selecting the size
of the modeling zone, we have weighed several tradeoffs. First ,we
need sufficient spatial resolution to characterize parcel-level composition
and pattern. We also need sufficient spatial extent to be able to
calculate and statistically compare landscape-level metrics.
However, the potentially high GIS processing time and computer run time
for what will be quite a complex agent-based model both argue for relatively
small initial zones.
